Since 1998, WildAid has helped to conserve the Islands by providing direct support to local initiatives that reduce poaching, educate Ecuadorians on pressing environmental issues and create sustainable economic alternatives compatible with conservation goals.  WildAid works closely with the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS) and the community alike, to bring about peaceful solutions to the islands' growing problems by working with all sectors.

Key Challenges

Illegal Fishing/ Overfishing:  Local, mainland, and foreign fisherman target sharks, tuna, lobster, and sea cucumbers.  In addition, there are too many fishermen chasing too few coastal resources.

Pollution and Development:  Both terrestrial and marine wildlife are threatened by development and pollution associated with runaway population growth and the ever increasing tourism industry.

Invasive Species & Viruses:  A number of species has already been exterminated by the ongoing introduction of non native animals, insects and plants.
