Illinois Shark Fin Ban is Signed into Law
Today, with the signature of Governor Pat Quinn, Illinois becomes the fourth state in the continental US, and the second largest, to ban the sale, trade, possession, and distribution of shark fins.
The measure (House Bill 4119) was introduced in the Illinois House of Representatives by Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) and has since passed the House with a vote of 81-33 and the State Senate with a vote of 41-13.
Illinois joins Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, California, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands, where similar legislation has been passed.
The ban will take effect on January 1, 2013.
