Thandi the Rhino Gives Birth

Thandi the Rhino

Good news! Thandi the rhino has given birth to a calf this morning at the Kariega Game Reserve near Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Thandi is a poaching survivor. She and two male rhinos were discovered by rangers in March of 2012, their horns brutally removed with machetes. Sadly, the two males didn't survive the attack. But two years of medical care and surgery has led to an amazing recovery for Thandi.

In December 2013, blood tests showed that Thandi was pregnant, and a team of veterinarians estimated that she would give birth in December 2014. She was a bit late, but with the birth of her new calf, Thandi has given conservationists new hope for the future of this majestic species.

"Thandi's calf is a real reward for her courage and everyone's unbelievable efforts in saving and caring for her," said Kariega Game Reserve co-owner Graeme Rushmere.
