Houston Rockets center and seven-time NBA All-Star Yao Ming continued his commitment to wildlife conservation with a visit to San Francisco last month. His visit coincided with WildAid’s first annual Gala on May 5, 2011. Yao was honored with WildAid’s Ambassador Award.
As WildAid’s lead ambassador on the shark issue, Yao has filmed a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs), held a press conference and is featured in a billboard campaign in Shanghai and Beijing in support of WildAid’s shark and wildlife conservation efforts.
Yao shot another PSA for ocean conservation while he was in San Francisco. Studio B productions used Pier 7 on San Francisco’s Embarcadero with children from the Chinese American International School and several other area middle schools. The local special effects and computer artists are working on the piece planned for a September release.
WildAid is also running a bus campaign in San Francisco through July 5 with Yao’s “Join Me, Say No to Shark Fin Soup” campaign on city buses in partnership with Shark Savers, the Humane Society, Oceana and the California Academy of Sciences. This is especially timely with legislation currently pending in California to ban the possession, sale, trade and distribution of shark fins.
Yao’s shark fin PSA is also currently running on a 20’ x 26’ CBS Super Screen in New York City’s Times Square on 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenue for three weeks, with additional WildAid spots running through July 5. Thanks to our Foundation supporter for making this opportunity possible.
Yao has led WildAid’s effort to reduce demand for shark fin in China. His celebrity and dedication continue to highlight this cruel and unnecessary practice. Thank you Yao for your persistence and support for our shark and wildlife conservation efforts.
